ON-ROAD CAPABILITIES

For a spacious vehicle with prodigious off-road capability, Discovery can be driven on-road with a remarkable lightness of touch. Its 4.0 litre V8 petrol engine or 2.5 litre Td5 direct-injection turbo diesel make a big contribution to your driving pleasure. Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) endows Discovery with almost car-like handling and impressive dynamic stability as you press through the bends. But sometimes what's off-road comes on-road, and that's where Electronic Traction Control (ETC) helps maintain reassuring grip whilst crossing patches of mud or ice or pulling away in wintry conditions. Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS) and Hill Descent Control (HDS) can also be used to advantage in on-road situations like heavy towing or negotiating ramps. We call these features multi-purpose technogies - driving aids that come into their own in extreme off-road conditions but which are designed to deliver real benefits on more conventional surfaces too.

OFF-ROAD CAPABILITIES

Off-road has been home ground for Land Rover for many decades, and it shows in the latest Discovery's excellent all-terrain prowess. At the heart of things is a tough, rugged Ladder-Frame Chassis fitted with long travel suspension that ensures maximum wheel articulation over uneven ground. A low-range transfer gearbox allows the selection of crawl speeds and maximum power while still on the move, so helping maintain precious momentum and traction where restarting from a standstill might prove difficult. Electronic Traction Control (ETC) constantly monitors wheel speeds to deliver smooth torque to the tyres with firmness grip. Hill Descent Control (HDC) can be selected with the push of a button and takes all the guesswork out of negotiating steep, slippery slopes. Experienced off-roaders will appreciate the presence of a manual centre differential lock in addition to ETC, a combination which offers the driver both manual and automatic control over traction and power delivery. Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS) at the rear can be raised manually to give maximum clearance and an increased departure angle. Even when set at its normal height, SLS is smart enough to rise automatically and allow forward movement to continue, should Discovery's rear be impeded by a high obstacle.
