Despite its familiar lines it is a totally new design, virtually down to the last nut and bolt. Its engineers have achieved levels of flawless fit and finish and specified components of exceptional durability throughout, as befits a car whose reputation of 'tough luxury' has been bestowed by some of the world's most demanding drivers and passengers. On the following pages you will have the opportunity to study in facinating detail the extraordinary combination of parts, features and options that are present in a car of Range Rover's quality and capability. DESIGN INNOVATION
From one perspective Range Rover is an elegant evolution of a familiar design, but from another viewpoint it's a startling package of cutting-edge innovations that contribute enormously to its peerless, all-round performance. Its five-speed automatic transmission, for example, has the first instance of full-time 4x4 shift-on-the-move between low and high ranges. Similarly, its Steptronic capability is also available in low range for the first time. Its Electronic Air Suspension with its interconnected transfer valves produces a ride of supreme quality, both on road and off. It boasts Hill Descent Control in high range as well as low, and in both forward and reverse gears. Its new steel monocoque body and integrated chassis is no less than two and a half times stiffer that previous designs. Even such mundane components as its doors display innovative thinking, with the whole of their inner structure made from cast aluminum for lightness, long life and a lower centre of gravity. ON-ROAD/OFF-ROAD Range Rover is designed to exhibit handling, refinement and levels of comfort that will satisfy the most demanding luxury car buyers in the world. Fully independent suspension is complimented by 4-corner, interconnected air springs which are specially tuned to optimise ride comfort while maintaining exemplary body control. Speed-sensitive rack and pinion power steering gives Range Rover a confident manoeuvrability that belies its size. And when you travel off-road, that confidence continues. Terrain optimisation software detects any change in surface and increases suspension travel and wheel articulation to maintain on-road levels of comfort and control. Throttle response is also altered to give greater control when driving over uneven or slippery ground.
The introduction of Range Rover also marks the arrival of a completely new range of engines. A petrol V8 with 4 valves per cylinder that produces 281 horsepower and 324 lb ft of torque is matched by an in-line six cylinder diesel that delivers 174 horsepower and 287 lb ft of torgue. These figures represent substantially improved performance over previous models - 31% increase in horsepower and 44% increase in diesel torque - and they underscore Range Rover's effortless on road performance. Both engines feature a dual-map electronic trottle whose response can be matched to terrain, and they are coupled with a fully electronic, five-speed automatic transmission with programmed Sport and Drive modes. The powertrain is completed by a new design of dual-range chain-driven transfer box which features electronically operated shift-on-the-move, delivering power to front and rear axles through a torque sensing centre differential. SAFETY AND SECURITY
DIMENSIONS AND CAPABILITIES Range Rover offers increases in almost every critical clearance angle for off-road driving, while nevertheless improving interior dimensions for even greater passenger luxury and comfort. Thanks to its innovative crosslinked air suspension, it can maintain a level ride height even over undulating terrain and be set to lower gently to ensure easy entry and exit when parked. Despite Range Rover's impressive power and peerless capabilities, front and rear park distance control and speed sensitive power assisted rack and pinion steering ensure that manoeuvring in tight spots is always a simple, trouble-free operation. PERFORMANCE AND WEIGHTS
Fuel consumption is also aided by the extensive use of aluminum throughout Range Rover, which helps to reduce weight and supplies the added benefit of a lower centre of gravity and more stable handling. Aluminum components include the bonnet assembly, outer door skins and inner door construction, wheels, transmission housing and front wings.
