Sophisticated all-round 4x4 performance

The new Grand Vitara was conceived to build on the heritage of past-generation models while solidifying the brand image of “Suzuki is SUV” (sport utility vehicle). The first-generation model pioneered a new compact SUV category, its stylish design, true all-round 4x4 performance, and compact capability conferring instant popularity, particularly with women. While the evolution toward more sophisticated on-road performance continued into the second generation, by then Suzuki was a market leader for compact SUVs, a position further solidified by the second-generation model’s distinctive design and engineering. In a well-conceived return to its roots, the new model further boosts sophistication as well as all round 4x4 performance.

Working with the product concept of “off-road athlete,” Suzuki engineers and designers developed the new Grand Vitara in the same way athletes apply rigorous training regimens to prove their true worth and capabilities in all conditions. The appearance is that of a championship-calibre athlete in a suit: muscular and well-toned underneath; stylish and gentle on the outside. Style, heart and dynamics all speak of a competitive machine that has only known success.

Greater sophistication, more comfort and utility, and improved performance on-road and off: all factors appealing to more people. One element remains unchanged, however: the Grand Vitara is a proven winner.

Planning began in 2001 for a worthy successor to the second-generation model. As good as it was, more and more people were inclined to choose crossover designs that look and perform well in the city. This trend prompted a return to the first-generation product concept and a totally fresh start.

Avoiding generic crossover designs produced an innovative SUV concept matched to the times and free of frills, yet upholding the respected cross-country performance of the current model. Clinics were held throughout the world to reaffirm design, performance and ride comfort characteristics, their findings particularly reflected in regards to global styling. As women comprise a significant portion of the target, they also were deeply involved in the design.

The first full-scale model produced in October 2002 featured a ruggedly attractive design, but lacking the sophistication to satisfy targeted goals. The fully market-oriented model is the final result of dedicated international marketing and world-class engineering.

The Grand Vitara’s compact dimensions ease city parking and urban handling, while its light overall weight saves fuel—no small factor in today's SUV market.

Positioning the front wheels at the front corners keeps the front overhang very short and the wheelbase long relative to overall length, for enhanced mobility and greater legroom and interior space.

The“Built-in Ladder Frame” (monocoque body with built-in frame) permits lower overall and floor heights, in turn lowering the centre of gravity despite the high ground clearance. Add in wide treads and a wide-and-low stance, and the result is an enhanced look of stability.

Interior matches exterior in spirit as well as design. While the refined atmosphere encourages occupants to relax and enjoy the ride, a distinct impression of sporty performance implies an active, fun-loving lifestyle. Reinforcing the strong SUV image, seat materials use geometric designs and dimpled surfaces: quality materials pleasing to the eye and touch. Suzuki’s renowned attention to detail is apparent in the quality fit and finish.

The smooth interior surfaces and rounded edges are for more than just looks: they also reduce minor injury potential during aggressive off-roading.

Focused chassis and body engineering, plus extensive noise- and vibration-reduction measures ensure a smooth, quiet ride. Quality climate-control and audio systems, pollen filter and rear-heater duct increase ride comfort.

Sporty and elegant in design—driver-friendly in function Stylish in design, the cockpit is also ergonomically focused to help the driver stay alert. Large, circular back-lit meters offer information at a glance, and all major controls are positioned for intuitive operation. Select models offer steering wheel-mounted audio controls (mute/hands-free cell-phone reception, volume, mode, channel) and cruise control.
